Drawing your Design: Wacom Intuos 3

by: Erik Vlietinck - Last Updated: Mon 11 October 2004

Wacom released its Intuos 3 graphic tablet a few weeks ago. The Intuos 3 is Wacom’s most elegant tablet up to date. It’s also their best. The tablet has touch strips, tablet keys and the well-know active surface. There is little to dislike about the Intuos 3.

Do you find the 6x8 active surface to be to small? Did you ever find yourself going off the edge either with the mouse or pen?

I’m interested in purchasing one of these but can’t decide between the larger drawing surface of the 9x12 or the more manageable size of the 6x8.

Paul, we offer our artists the choice of 6x8 and 9x12 tablets.  We have found that 9 times out of 10, they prefer the 6x8s.  As a result, at our ad agency, we have deployed about 6 9x12 tablets and almost 100 6x8s.  And this is even with most people with dual 1600x1200 displays, which cut the tablet’s effective working area in half vertically.  They still seem to prefer the 6x8s, after trying each.

Also, the 6x8s are a LOT easier to travel with. grin (They hug a laptop nicely and fit in a backpack’s laptop compartment easily, unlike the bulky 9x12 units.)

Hey thanks for the info Compudude!

I love the new 6x8. I find the overall size of the tablet to be pretty big, with lots of extra space below and to the side of the pad itself. With limited desk space already I couldn’t jusify putting that 9x12 beast on the table.

I prefer the 6 x 8 for the reasons CompuDude mentioned. I’ve got an Intuos 3 on order—upgrading from a perfectly operational original Intuous 6 x 8.
