Adobe InCopy CS Review
by: Erik Vlietinck - Last Updated: Wed 25 August 2004
Adobe InCopy CS is Adobe’s editorial solution. It is designed to work together with InDesign CS, but can be used as word processor by itself as well. However, InCopy CS is aimed primarily at the user in the editorial workflow. InCopy CS produces pure XML files. The product is delivered by Adobe as well as Value Added Resellers these days, whereas previous versions could only be purchased from VARs.

We have been using InCopy for a year now. Problems have multiplied such that meetings are planned this week regarding abandoning InCopy completely and cutting our losses.
Program seems fundamentally unstable. Crashes are sudden and dramatic, files are inexplicably locked, and the program frequently fails to open properly, requiring complete PC reboot.

I have been testing InCopy CS for a few months now, and have not experienced any of your troubles at all. Are you using a third-party plug-in system for integration with InDesign? If so, only a handful of developers get that right.
If you’re using the Adobe Bridge, that could be the culprit. In general, I haven’t heard of any other users experiencing what you experience.

I am a designer for a publication that has 4 different zones (issues) and the articles run the same in each issue however in different space. Will InCopy work for all my zones? How can the editor check out layout in each zone?

Dear Jill,
Your problem is not directly related to InCopy, but to the plugin you use that will integrate InDesign with InCopy. I know of two excellent quality plugins that should answer your specific case: SoftCare K5 and WoodWing Smart Connection Pro or Enterprise.
URLs: www.softcare.com and www.woodwing.com
If you have further questions, you know where to ask them .

Thanks for the response! I haven’t purchased the upgrade to CS yet or InCopy. So are you telling me that I need to purchase one of these plug-ins also? They are neccessary for multiple publications?
ps
I went to softcare and couldn’t find the info.

Oops, Jill, you had to go to softcare.de instead of .com, sorry.
Yes, you need a plugin to bridge between ID and IC. The Adobe plugin, called “Bridge” itself is only good if you work with 2 to 3 people simultaneously. Otherwise, it’s too “light” to fulfill anybody’s needs…
Cheers,
Erik

We are functioning with 3 designers and 1 editor, usually 1 or 2 designers on one pub. Will the “Bridge” work for now. Like most, we are on a budget and if I can still be productive with the Bridge, that would be preferred. But I don’t want to skimp if it really will make such a difference.
you rock
