HP DesignJet 30 - Part 3: The HP and EFI/Best Designer RIP
by: Erik Vlietinck - Last Updated: Thu 24 June 2004
The HP DesignJet 30 comes without any software RIP to make the device attractive to photographers as well as professional designers who want to proof. Optionally, however, the buyer can opt for a HP software RIP or an EFI/Best Designer RIP. The latter has more features than the HP’s. It is also more powerful in terms of workflow support. The EFI/Best Designer RIP is an instrument that offers almost total control over every aspect of the DesignJet 30. In my opinion, it is a must-have option and a better one to consider than the HP RIP.

I just read thru this article and I came across the part where it say that it’s not possible to add profiles to the HP RIP, but I think it is possible.
In the job properties or even the default one, in the color management section, one can add rgb or cmyk profiles. Also if a user is using some other media, it is possible to add other media profiles.
Or am I missing something here? Other than that, the 30 is one hell of a printer.
cheers

You’re right, I should have phrased it differently. You can add profiles, but you can’t make them using just the printer and the RIP. To do that, you would need a spectrophotometer outside the machine, and not just the one inside the machine---which is used for closed loop calibration.
Should have phrased that differently…

Nice review!
One thing I cam across is the ability to calibrate other profiles than the builtin. In Efi DE 3.0.1 with a DJ 10ps, you were only able to use the printer calibration with the profiles that came with the software. Even the profiles downloadable on bestcolor.com did not support this feature. Do you know, if this issue is solved in 4.0?
Kind regards,

Christian, I think you’re referring to the built-in calibration as I explained above. Indeed, the internal calibration of the printer only works with the paper types available in the firmware. However, using a GretagMacBeth EyeOne and the EFI Designer ProfileConnector allows you to create profiles for pretty much anything you care to throw at it.
The only problem is that the EyeOne is about just as expensive as the printer itself…

Thanks alot for all your effort. Your review was very helpful,
I’m in the market for a photo printer, originaly was interested in the Epson 2200P , now you made me think. I am a Epson fan for archival quality prints and until today I was not aware of another affordable brand. I never ever gave HP a thought until now Thank You
