Books on Photography & Video

Photoshop Workflow Setups

Eddie Tapp is a well-known photographer and teacher. He’s highly appreciated by Scott Kelby, the big boss of NAPP. And his books are worth their money, especially if you want to learn about Photoshop in a highly visual way. He only lacks the tongue-in-cheek style of writing Kelby is renown for.

Photoshop Workflow Setups by Eddie Tapp

Eddie Tapp is an award-winning photographer, lecturer and consultant. He writes for O’Reilly, and one of his latest books covers customising Photoshop for digital photography. The book’s title is slightly off the mark. It’s not really about setting up Photoshop, but more about finding those features in the application that can help with digital photography.

Eddie Tapp has something to say. The first book written by him that I read was the one on Practical Colour Management. I liked that book a lot, although some of the opinions in there are open for discussion. But discussion is good. I’m afraid this book won’t be food for discussion, though. It’s basically a very thorough training book for people who start using Photoshop for digital photography.

Fine Art Printing for Photographers

Printing photos is hard enough these days with colour management that has to be taken care of, a choice of printing technologies that dazzles even the most experienced photographer, and the risk of investing into the wrong equipment. Uwe Steinmueller and Juergen Gulbins have jointly written a guide for photographers and publishers RockyNook have released this book to the public through O’Reilly.

Steinmueller is a well-known photographer and writer on the subject, while Gulbins is more broadly interested and brings his experience in desktop publishing, digital photography to the book. The result is a reference guide for professional and serious amateur photographers who wish to print their work with knowledge and using the best possible technologies.

Photoshop CS2 RAW

Mikkel Aaland is a professional photographer who wrote nine books. In this book, he discusses how you should use Photoshop Camera RAW to obtain best results.

Digital Photography Expert Techniques

O’Reilly published the 2nd edition of the book written by Ken Milburn on digital photography techniques. The book is a sort of personal coach for digital photographers who don’t yet know how digital photography differs from analogue.

Scanning Negatives and Slides, A Book by Sascha Steinhoff

O’Reilly distributes books published by Rocky Nook these days, and the Scanning Negatives and Slides book is one of these titles. Originally, the book was written and published in German, as the author is a German computer expert with a passion for photography. The original German publisher, Dpunkt Verlag, found this to be reason enough for letting mr. Steinhoff write a book on the subject of scanning negatives and slides.

Rocky Nook in Canada translated the book in English and O’Reilly is now distributing this work. I was very thrilled by the idea that an author would finally write the ultimate book on scanning negatives and slides using a scanner and several scanning applications. The marketing text for the book let me assume the author was going to cover SilverFast, VueScan, NikonScan and a whole bunch of different scanners.

Photoshop Masking and Compositing - Adobe Photoshop Unmasked

Katrin Eismann is a well-known writer of books that teach you how to use creative technology in products such as Adobe Photoshop. Her latest encyclopaedic work “Photoshop Masking and Compositing” is a fat reference and tutorial type of book that covers literally everything you need to know on masking, either by using channels or layers, or anything else that fits that job. The book also covers compositing. With 540 pages, it is a heavy-weight.

Brilliant Photoshop CS2

Brilliant Guides are published by Prentice Hall, and they have been developed to find information you need easily and without fuss. I can safely say that this is no hype. It’s true, the Brilliant Photoshop CS2 book by Andy Anderson and Steve Johnson is a reference work that lets you easily and quickly find what you need to know.

Photoshop Artistry With DVD-rom

This New Riders book was written for photographers using Photoshop CS2 and beyond, it says on the cover. The authors are well-known experts Sean Duggan, Barry Haynes and Wendy Crumpler. The book starts with a voyage through Photoshop’s interface. Very rapidly, though, you’ll get a bath of Photoshop techniques that go well beyond the basics.

Digital Photography Pocket Guide

The third edition of this wonderful pocket guide published by O’Reilly is filled to the rim with practical tips and tricks that are great to carry with you when shooting pictures. Some of these tips are not just useful for digital photographers either.

The Art of RAW Conversion - The Masters Speak

Digital SLRs let you measure White Balance when you photograph, but it is not always easy to do in the field, especially when you’re shooting nature scenes. Your best bet, therefore, is to set the White Balance to Auto for all cameras and adjust it later in the RAW converter. This is only one of the myriad of tips, tricks and knowlegde bits the book “The Art of RAW Conversion” written by Uwe Steinmueller and Juergen Gukbins contains.

Secrets of Videoblogging

Do you want to know how to handle a digital video camera, and how to create simple effects? Are you a beginner in the realm of digital video? If so, this book is valuable as it will show you exactly how to use a digital video camera to create videoblog entries. And that means you’ll have to be proficient in the most basic and simple video and video editing skills.
