Book Review: Designing Web Navigation, by James Kalbach

If a former librarian and current Human Factors Engineer with LexisNexis can’t tell us what good web navigation design is, no-one can. James Kalbach is an expert in his field and O’Reilly had him write a book on a subject that we all take for granted but which we feel frustrated about when it has been badly done. O’Reilly Refreshes Web Development Books

With its “The Definitive Guide” books on CSS, HTML and XHTML, and the CSS CookBook, O’Reilly has once again updated its titles on web development to have them include the latest protocols, standards and online gimmicks that are currently used by web designers and developers.

Secrets of RSS

RSS is one way of making sure your content and ultimately your web design will be seen by as many people as possible. Real Simple Syndication is also used for a number of other Web 2.0 applications. Steve Holzner, author of the book Secrets of RSS explains what RSS is, how it works, what you can do with it and how you can stretch the limits of its use.

Death To Non-Standard Web Browsers

Designers like Andy Clarke say we have got to move beyond the non-standard browsers. He calls his design approach — and that of many others in the fore front of CSS design — “Transcendent CSS” — which also happens to be the title of his book. Transcendent CSS reaches beyond the traditional browser by only coding the latest approved of CSS standards, without worrying about hacks to make the design work in browsers such as Internet Explorer 5 and 6 and before.

Jakob Nielsen and Hoa Loranger wrote their follow-up to Nielsen’s best seller “Designing Web Usability” published in 2000. The new book is still aimed at e-commerce sites, but is useful to bloggers and content providers as well.

Core CSS, 2nd edition is a comprehensive guide to CSS1 through CSS3. It not only offers a complete overview of all the tags and code and the results, but also a look into the future with CSS3 and what’s more important, an overview of code validity for each common browser in use. It is especially the latter which makes the book quite unique in its domain.
