Books on Graphic Design & 3D

Cinema 4D 10 Workshop

Arndt von Koenigsmarck wrote a book that teaches you how to create objects in Cinema 4D R10. The book comes with a CD-ROM on which you will find demos of Cinema 4D for Windows and Mac OS X (not Vista and not Leopard). There are also training files and an extra plug-in on the CD-ROM. The book itself is true to its subtitle.

Working Smart in Adobe Creative Suite

An excerpt from the book “Working smart in Adobe Photoshop CS2”: “Bridge is great for watching files arrive in a folder. For example, if you’re processing digital camera photos or scanning image after image, open a browser window for the folder where you save your files. As they arrive, you can watch them fill the browser window one by one. Filmstrip is good for this purpose, because you can quickly check each file with a large preview, using the arrow keys to go from image to image.”

Design Workshop

Robin Williams wrote a design workshop, and she covers all kinds of topics that designers will find handy to be reminded about. But she also covers some subjects designers just don’t think about, like forms.

After Effects 7 Studio Techniques

Mark Christiansen received Adobe Press’ OK to write a book contributed to After Effects 7 Studio Techniques. THe result is a book that covers techniques for advanced users. No introductions to the interface and such basics here, but an immediate jump in the deep end.

Adobe After Effects 7 Classroom in a Book

As with each Classroom in a Book, Adobe has kept the basic concept and flow: each chapter has exercises, so that you feel like you’re in a real classroom.

Real World Color Management 2nd Edition

Real World Color Management by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting is a standard work. It should be in the library of every desktop publisher, photographer and graphic designer.

Mastering Piranesi

Bonnie Roskes wrote a manual for Piranesi, the painting program that is naturally associated with SketchUp. The book is crammed with detailed screenshots and step-by-step explanations of how to achieve specific effects with materials, textures and paint.

Real World Illustrator CS2

Real World books are my favourites, and Mordy Golding’s Real World Adobe Illustrator CS2 is no exception. This book explains everything you could possibly want to know about Illustrator CS2, including why you would use it instead of, for example, Photoshop, what you use it for, and of course, how to make the best use of its many features. Every graphic designer should have this book.
